What it is

What is a bionic arm?

A bionic arm, also called a robotic arm or myoelectric prosthesis, is an arm prosthesis with a motorised hand controlled by the electrical signals of the muscles in your residual limb.

At Limbium we design and make the socket, forearm, structure and connections to your measurements and, depending on your amputation level, the elbow and wrist. We integrate bionic hands from specialist manufacturers, such as the Zeus hand by Aether Biomedical, with their batteries and electrodes.

In use

Open, close and grip

The hand is controlled by the signals from the muscles in your residual limb, through the electrodes in the socket.
  • User opening and closing the hand of their Limbium bionic prosthesis
  • User with their Limbium bionic arm resting on the table
  • Limbium bionic forearm prosthesis with an articulated hand, in a skin-tone finish

Why Limbium

Technology, personalisation and independence

  • 100% custom socket

We 3D-scan your residual limb to design a comfortable, light and stable socket with no pressure points.

  • Controlled by your muscles

Electrodes in the socket read your muscle signals to open, close and change grip. We study where to place them in your case.

  • Modular design

Configured for your amputation level and ready for future component upgrades.

  • Quality components

A bionic hand from specialist manufacturers and a structure in light, strong technical materials.

Amputation levels

A bionic arm for every level

  • Transradial

Below-elbow amputation: socket, forearm and bionic hand.

  • Transhumeral

Above-elbow amputation: we add the elbow joint depending on your case.

  • Higher levels and limb differences

Custom solutions for higher amputations and for people born without part of the arm.

The process

How to get your bionic prosthesis

  1. Assessment

We look at your amputation level, your goals and your funding options.

  2. Scanning and signals

We scan your residual limb and study your muscle signals to position the electrodes.

  3. Test socket

You try the socket and the hand control, and we adjust until it works the way you need.

  4. Delivery and training

We deliver the prosthesis with your orthotic clinic, teach you how to use it and follow up.

Funding

Could it be free for me?

Depending on your case, your prosthesis may be fully funded. It depends on the type of prosthesis, your situation and who funds it. We review it with you at no cost before talking about price.

Review my case
  • Spanish public health system

The orthoprosthetic benefit of the Spanish National Health System may cover your prosthesis. We help you with the paperwork.

  • Insurers and mutual societies

If your case comes through an insurer, a mutual society or an accident claim, we coordinate the process for you.

  • Grants and organisations

Depending on your case, regional grants, charities or adapted-sport programmes may help. We point you in the right direction.

FAQ

Questions about the bionic arm

What is a bionic arm?

It is an arm prosthesis with a motorised hand controlled by the electrical signals of the muscles in the residual limb. Electrodes in the socket pick up those signals and the hand opens, closes or changes grip.

Is a bionic arm the same as a robotic arm?

In practice, yes: both terms are used for the same motorised prosthesis. The technical term is myoelectric prosthesis.

Which amputation levels does it cover?

We design bionic prostheses for transradial (below the elbow), transhumeral (above the elbow) and higher amputations, including congenital limb differences.

What is the difference between a bionic hand and a bionic arm?

The bionic hand is the motorised terminal. The bionic arm is the complete prosthesis: the socket, the electrodes, the forearm structure and, depending on the amputation level, the wrist and elbow.

Which bionic hand does it use?

We integrate bionic hands from specialist manufacturers, such as the Zeus hand by Aether Biomedical. Limbium designs and makes the socket, forearm, structure and connections to measure and, depending on the configuration, the elbow and wrist.
